How Much Do Security Guards Earn in NZ? Pay Rates 2026 — and How to Earn More

Let's talk about the number everyone searches for and nobody in this industry discusses honestly: what security guards actually earn in New Zealand.

The published figures. Indeed puts the average at around $25 an hour. Randstad's guide says most guards take home $23–$30 an hour, rising with experience and specialisation. Seek estimates the average salary at $65,000–$80,000.

Look at those numbers. Most of the industry sits barely above minimum wage — for work where you're first on scene, dealing with people in crisis, making split-second decisions. And the gap between what a guard is paid and what the client is charged doesn't come down to experience. It comes down to who keeps the margin.

Where the money actually goes. When a client pays a security company for your shift, they're paying well above your wage. The gap covers rosterers, managers, offices, and profit. You take the risk on the ground; the margin goes to the layers above you.

The contractor maths. Work as an independent contractor on Guard Select and the client's money comes to you. The platform fee is 3% — you keep 97%. You set your own rate, and clients choose you on your profile, credentials, and a reputation you own.

The honest part. Contracting isn't free money, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. As a contractor you handle your own tax — though on Guard Select you can elect a withholding rate with an IR330C and we'll deduct it from each payment and send it to Inland Revenue, so there's no lump sum waiting at the end of the year. You cover your own ACC levies. There's no sick leave or annual leave, so your rate needs to be priced for that — which is exactly why contractor rates run higher than wages. That's not a loophole. It's the correct price of the work.

How to earn more. Get your COA classes sorted. Train — capability is what lets you charge for it. Build a reputation clients can see. And stop giving away the margin on your own risk.

The pay problem in New Zealand security doesn't fix itself. It fixes when enough good guards price their work properly and companies have to compete for them.
